Mapping the Arabic Language

How every spoken word is classified, from articulation down to noun, verb and particle.

  1. 1.Articulation (لَفْظ)

Every word produced by the tongue is an articulation (لَفْظ). It is either meaningful (مَوْضُوع), with an established meaning such as كِتَاب "a book", or meaningless (مُهْمَل), with no established meaning.

  2. 2.Single and compound

Meaningful articulations are single (مُفْرَد), one word like كِتَاب, or compound (مُرَكَّب), more than one word like رَسُوْلُ الله "Messenger of Allah".

  3. 3.Three types of word

Every single word is a noun (اِسْم), a verb (فِعْل) or a particle (حَرْف). Every word in the Arabic dictionary fits one of these three.

  4. 4.Beneficial and non-beneficial

A compound is beneficial (مُفِيد) when it expresses a complete idea, a full sentence. It is non-beneficial (غَيْر مُفِيد) when the idea is incomplete, a phrase.
